Today we celebrate Flag Day — a time to remember the adoption of our nation’s flag, and the foundation of our nation’s freedom.

I proudly display the American flag at our front door (always positioned to the left) and every time I look at it I feel a sense of pride. I’m reminded of the giving spirit of our citizens and the privileges and opportunities we have in this country. The American flag is our country’s brand, so to speak. It symbolizes America — the greatest country in the world.

If you grew up in America, you probably learned about a woman named Betsy (Griscom) Ross. What a fine example she was of the entrepreneurial spirit! Betsy was born in 1752 in Philadelphia and was raised in a family of carpenters. She learned needlework at home and in school. She married John Ross and together they opened an upholstery business in New Jersey in 1773, with flags being one of their specialties.

After the Revolutionary War started, the business faced challenges as fabrics were difficult to come by. In 1776, John Ross died leaving Betsy to keep the business running. Through her network, she met George Washington who was impressed with her skills. Legend has it that he asked her to design and sew a flag for the new nation.

Betsy was a mother, a businesswoman, the foundation of her household and, as I see it, a true entrepreneur. She had courage and determination to keep the business running when everything else around her was falling apart. Can you imagine what life must have been like for her? And yet she persevered despite the challenges. She symbolizes commitment, much like our Independent Business Owners (IBOs) at PURE today. Just like Betsy, our IBOs continue to give hope to those who want a better life and an opportunity to strive for greatness.

Today may not be a national holiday, but it’s a very significant day nevertheless. May the American flag, and Betsy Ross, be reminders of that great entrepreneurial spirit as we spread Whole Health across the nation.

Remember the real meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day officially marks the beginning of summer as we fire up the grill and enjoy time together.  Many of us are celebrating graduations, picnicking and planning vacations.  It’s a time to revel in the sun and just feel good.

The three-day weekend brings out a lot of excitement, but it’s also time to remember the true meaning of the holiday. It’s a special day to mourn the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives defending this country. We’re reminded of the tremendous price Americans paid throughout history to preserve our democracy, our values and our way of life.

Memorial Day began as Decoration Day in the 1800s, a time to honor those who died in the Civil War. People celebrated by decorating the graves of the fallen. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) designated May 30 as a day “for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”1

Originally, only soldiers who had died in the Civil War were honored. The first observance of the holiday after the Civil War was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865.2  After WWI, the holiday extended honor to all Americans who have died while in military service. Their ultimate sacrifice is the reason for the freedoms we have today. We must not take those for granted.

Harry S. Truman said, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” No, we will never forget, and we can still make a difference by proudly supporting our veterans.

A story of transformation: Veronica Fuller

Veronica Fuller, a PURE Independent Business Owner (IBO) and multi-medaled veteran, is a fine example of the PURE philosophy as she participated in and benefited from the 28-day detox program and thoroughly enjoys making a difference in the lives of others.

Veronica served in the U.S. Navy from 1987 to 1998 as a hospital corpsman providing medical care for sailors. She was stationed in Maryland, Virginia, Naval Station Rota in Spain and on the Navy’s hospital ship USNS Comfort. Her honors include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Battle “E” Ribbon, Combat Action Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Medal, Military Unit Commendation and Sea Service Ribbon.

After retiring due to medical reasons, Veronica integrated back into civilian life working as an OB/GYN clinical nurse. She then returned to school to obtain her medical esthetician license.

During her retirement, Veronica saw her health and weight decline. She suffered from various health problems and her weight climbed to 245 pounds.   • NASCAR Cup Driver, Gray Gaulding, shared with us the impact products by PURE has had on him and how he will be wrapping his car in PURE branding in select 2019 races. He also distributed Hero Cards and autographs.

Innovate & Activate

  • Dr. Bucky Buckner, Chairman of the WAB, shared the why behind the Cleanse, Balance, Build, Focus philosophy and introduced the new Daily Detox product.
  • Mark Paulsen highlighted the benefits of the reformulated and repackaged GPS product line with the addition of GPS Hydrate in Grape, GPS Circulate in Strawberry Kiwi and GPS Reset. He also shared that we are working to get all GPS products Informed Sports Certified.
  • Updates on the WAB (Wellness Advisory Board) and how they are helping to propel us forward, and the announcement of the Executive Committee comprised of Dr. Bucky Buckner, Dr. Carmen Keith and Rich Scheckenbach who will work directly with corporate on a regular basis to continue to advance us in formulas and science.
  • The Product Expo highlighted the key benefits of all the new products and sales tools and created an interactive, physical experience interwoven with GPS sampling.

Motivate

  • Inspiring stories from guest speaker Gary Guller about cultivating compassion and responsibility for others.
