Recycling on Earth Day and every day

Here at PURE we are proud to celebrate Earth Day on April 22. Did you know that each year, nearly 29 million tons of plastic end up in landfills across America? Are you doing your part to recycle every day?

Look at the bottom of any PURE container or bottle and you’ll see the recycling logo. When you’ve used all the product, simply rinse out the remnants, then place the container among the rest of your plastics, cans and bottles you’re taking to the curb.

You can also upcycle your containers! Here are some creative ways to find new uses for empty containers and bottles. Have fun with these while, at the same time, making the planet a cleaner place.

  • Organize your junk drawer or craft space. The GPS Adapt bottle is small enough to hold glitter or sequins. It can also hold push pins, rubber bands, pencil erasers and other small gadgets.
  • Organize a tool box. The garage can quickly become a storage mess; but your toolbox doesn’t have to be. Our containers are great to hold loose nails, screws, hex nuts, etc. so you’re ready for that next project! Simply label the container with a Sharpie and voila.
  • Create a coin holder for your vehicle.
  • Loose tea and spices in your kitchen? Stick them into an ENERGY tub for a great airtight solution.
  • Make mini ice packs, or any size for that matter. Just fill a container with water, freeze and you’re ready for those impromptu picnics or camping trips. Also great for keeping your frozen items cold while coming home from the grocery store.

  • No more missing game pieces, or Legos. Use containers to store small pieces from your kids’ games.
  • Keep matches dry for camping. Just glue a piece of sandpaper to the lid and you’re ready to go.
  • Keep jewelry safely stored while traveling.
  • Make a homemade mini first-aid kit.
  • Create a memory jar with a larger container, like Organic Sulfur. Jot down memories on paper that you can read during special moments or holidays.
  • Make a hide-a-key! Simply put your key in a used container and glue the cap to a rock or a pine cone.

Egg-cellent Recipes

In honor of Easter and the tradition of hunting Easter eggs, we have some delicious egg recipes to share with you. The first one incorporates Mangosteen Superfruit juice and the second one uses Greens, both products by PURE. Not only do I love eggs for breakfast and brunch, but I’ll eat them for lunch and dinner, too.

Eggs are a nutrient-dense food. They contain high-quality protein, they offer all nine essential amino acids, and they’re a great source of vitamin D. They also contain vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin (B2) and the antioxidant selenium, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which help keep our eyes healthy.

Yes, the yolk does contain high dietary cholesterol, but it is also low in saturated fat, an important factor. Because of this, eggs get a thumb’s up from the government’s 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

These recipes are a great way to introduce the products to others, and a way to offer healthy alternatives the whole family can enjoy.

Eggs with Smoked Salmon and Mangosteen Sauce  

 Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 Tablespoons Mangosteen Superfruit juice
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 stick of softened butter
  • 4 English muffins, split and toasted
  • 8 oz. smoked salmon, sliced into 1 oz. pieces
  • 1 Tablespoon chopped dill (optional)

Directions:

  1. Heat 2-3 inches of water, vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt in large saucepan to boiling. Adjust heat to keep liquid simmering. Break eggs, one at a time, into small bowl. Hold dish close to surface of pan and slip egg into water.
  2. Cook eggs until whites are completely set and yolks begin to thicken but are not hard, 3-5 minutes. Do not stir. Lift eggs from water with slotted spoon; drain well on platter lined with paper towels. Keep warm.
  3. Whisk egg yolks, water, Mangosteen juice and lemon juice in a small saucepan until blended. Cook over low heat whisking constantly, until mixture is foamy and small bubbles appear. Whisk in the butter slices, one piece at a time, until butter is melted and sauce is thickened. Remove pan from heat immediately.
  4. Spread muffin halves with remaining butter. Arrange muffin halves on plates and top with salmon. Place an egg over salmon, top with sauce and sprinkle with dill.

 

‘Greened’ Deviled Eggs

 Ingredients:

  • 14 large, hard-boiled eggs
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ – 1 Tablespoon Greens
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1/3 cup cooked bacon, crumbled
  • ¼ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tablespoons chopped fresh chives

Directions:

  1. Cut eggs lengthwise in half. Remove yolks to medium bowl. Reserve 24 white halves. Finely chop remaining 4 white halves and set aside.
  2. Mash yolks with fork. Add mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, lemon juice, pepper and Greens; mix well. Add chopped egg whites, bacon, cheese and chives; mix well.
  3. Spoon 1 heaping Tablespoon yolk mixture into each reserved egg white half. Refrigerate, covered, to blend flavors. Sprinkle with paprika just before serving, if desired.

Has a product been shelved too long to consume?

How often do you pay attention to the stamped date on a food product or vitamin bottle? Depending on what kind of product it is, you may see the words “manufacture date”, “expiration date”, “best by date”, or another term. They all indicate the difference between a quality product and one that you should be consuming at your own risk.

Let’s imagine you had a bottle of unopened GoYin in your pantry with a stamped “manufacture date” of September 2016. Since it was made over a year ago, is it now unsafe to consume? Let’s find out.

First a little history

Federal regulations do not require dietary supplement manufacturers to include an expiration date on their products. Due to rules within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDAs) current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) regulations, our dietary supplement products (products labeled with Supplement Facts as opposed to Nutrition Facts) have “manufacture date”, “best by date”, or “expiration date”.

The “manufacture date” (mfg) printed on the label is the date the product was produced in compliance with Good Manufacturing (GMP) regulations.

Safe consumption

Most of our products should be consumed within two years of their “manufacture date”. Some products (i.e. Cell Water, Alkaline Water Concentrate) are good for four years past their listed manufacturer date. A “best by date” means a product has optimal flavor and nutrition through the end of the month of a listed date.

If your products have been properly stored with intact seals, then it is safe to consume them even if it is two years after the “manufacture date”. The flavor of the products may change if they are consumed outside of their intended shelf lives.

Once opened, products should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within a 30-40-day window. The 30-45 days is the furthest date we still guarantee them to be safe and effective. If it is opened and has been out of the refrigerator overnight, it is okay to consume. Powered products, once opened, will last longer than this – up to 60-90 days.

How to correctly store your products:

Storing your supplements in the right place can make a big difference in their quality and potency. In fact, the top threat facing your supplements is moisture. Water can oxidize and damage the ingredients, so keep your supplements in a dry location.

High temperatures are also a problem, as they can interfere with the delicate structure of nutrients and cause them to break down.

  • Store your supplements in a cool dry place, away from heat, moisture and direct light.
  • Keep supplements in their original containers, that way you’ll know their “manufacture date”.
  • Always keep supplements away from children.
  • Always read each label for storage and usage directions.

Cooking with Mila — plus a delicious recipe!

Almond Butter Mila Balls          

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 cup raw honey

  • Shape into golf-ball-sized balls, place in a container and freeze.
  • Take out and eat when ready for a quick, sweet snack.

GoYin Pops

Ingredients:
  • GoYin
  • Crushed fruit (optional)
  • Toothpicks or popsicle sticks
Directions:
  1. Pour GoYin into ice cube trays.
  2. Add a small amount of fresh fruit (optional)
  3. Place a toothpick or popsicle stick into each cube.
  4. Place in the freezer until frozen.
GoYin Jello
Try this delicious jello recipe for a fun way to get your daily serving of superfruit juice. Experiment with different ratios and types of fruit juice and superfruit juice. Try using 1 cup of GoYin in this recipe. We found that 1 cup Goji and ¾ cup apple juice also works well. Mangosteen did not set up so you may wish to avoid using this superfruit as well as the Fusion.
Ingredients:
  • ¾ cup GoYin/superfruit/fruit juice
  • ¼ cup boiled water
  • 1 tablespoon gelatin
Directions:
  1. Put water on stove to boil.
  2. While waiting for water to boil, whisk gelatin into ¼ cup juice and mix until smooth.
  3. Add boiled water to juice and gelatin mixture; whisk until mixed.
  4. Add remaining fruit juice and whisk until combine.
  5. Pour jello mixture into a greased pan and allow to set in fridge for two hours.
  6. Remove, slice and enjoy!
“Warming” Baked Pineapple and GoYin
Foods and herbs are categorized as cooling or warming in traditional Chinese herbal practices. Cooling or warming foods may be eaten for a specific, desired result. Traditional Chinese herbal practices are to eat more warming foods during the winter to offset the cooling effect of the season. This recipe uses warming ingredients which are cooked to enhance their warming effect.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pineapple, peeled and cut into spears
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup GoYin
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 3 tsp fresh, pureed ginger
Directions:
  1. Place pineapple spears in baking dish; pour GoYin over the pineapple and let sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Place ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg on top of pineapple and bake at 450° for 30-45 minutes.
  3. Remove from oven and enjoy.
