But first, coffee

If you drink coffee, what do you like most about it? Is it the way it gets you going in the morning? Is it the rich, satisfying flavor? Or, is it the way it warms you up? What about the fact that it contains chlorogenic acid? Of all of these, the last may be one of the best reasons to drink coffee, in my opinion.

Today is International Coffee Day, a great time to share the great benefits coffee brings to those who drink it.

Chlorogenic acid, or CGA, is a phytochemical (a chemical that occurs naturally in plants) that is rich in healthy antioxidants. The benefits range from weight loss support to the maintenance of a healthy cardiovascular system. CGA is also responsible for that quintessential, bitter coffee flavor.

Coffee naturally contains acids, but CGA, in green and roasted coffee beans, is the most prevalent. In fact, coffee provides a higher concentration of CGA than any other foods. The lighter the coffee, the more CGA it contains.

Weight loss

Studies have shown that chlorogenic acid and caffeine work together to reduce abdominal fat by increasing the opening of fat cells so they can release energy. Chlorogenic acid may also reduce the growth of new fat cells through its antioxidant effects.1

A 2007 study published in “The Journal of International Medical Research” showed that chlorogenic acid-enriched instant coffee appeared to have a significant effect on the absorption and utilization of glucose from the diet. Consumption of coffee may result in reduced body mass and body fat when compared with the use of normal instant coffee.2

Healthy heart

Some experiments have shown that chlorogenic acid may also inhibit absorption of glucose in the digestive system. A 2015 study published in “The Journal of Human Hypertension” showed a reduction in blood pressure related to chlorogenic acid consumption. CGA consumption significantly increased fat oxidation during sleep, suggesting that beverages containing CGA may be beneficial to reduce body fat and prevent obesity. 3

In the CGA group, but not the placebo group, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) decreased significantly during the ingestion period. There was no difference in body mass index and pulse rate between groups, nor were there any apparent side effects. Thus, CGA from green coffee bean extract is effective in decreasing blood pressure and safe for patients with mild hypertension.

Another study showed that chlorogenic acid from green coffee bean extract is effective in decreasing blood pressure and is safe for patients with mild hypertension.4

Enjoy a PURE coffee break

PURE Café is a slimming coffee drink that suppresses appetite so you can limit the number of calories you are eating throughout the day. It contains 200mg of chlorogenic acid and 155mg of natural sources of caffeine. It has a delicious mocha flavor and contains B vitamins that increase energy and support mental clarity.*

PURE Perk is a Barista, dark roast coffee blend that includes Brazilian and Columbian coffee beans. Just one cup provides mental focus within minutes, suppresses appetite and boosts energy for up to five hours.* One serving contains an estimated 150mg of chlorogenic acid and 100mg of natural sources of caffeine. Listen to Darin Blackhurst, Director of Research & Development and Quality and IBO Leslie Forester discuss the benefits of PURE Perk on our PURE Product Spotlight podcast.

In addition to our coffee products, Green Coffee Bean is rich in chlorogenic acid; one serving contains 400mg. This product can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels after you eat as well as help maintain healthy glucose levels.* Simply take 2 capsules 15-20 minutes before meals. Always remember that diet and lifestyle always come first when achieving optimal weight loss and overall health.

Next time you’re in your favorite café, surprise the waiter by saying, “I’ll take my chlorogenic acid black, please.”

It’s important to limit your caffeine consumption to no more than 400mg per day. Too much caffeine may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness and an occasional rapid heartbeat. Note that PURE Café, PURE Perk and Green Coffee Bean are not recommended for children under the age of 18.

Ask the Expert answers your product questions

At PURE: People United Reaching Everyone, we have an expert team that is dedicated to answering your product and nutrition questions.

Here are the most popular questions from the previous few weeks. You might find a topic related to a question you have.

Q: Can PURE Perk be taken once a day, every day and for an extended time?
A: We recommend taking it once a day but it can safely be taken up to twice a day. The second serving should be taken four hours after the first serving, as the label suggests. Do not take the product within four hours before bedtime, and do not exceed two servings per day.

Q: How many times a day can you take GPS Circulate?
A: It can be taken 30 minutes before exercise. If desired, it may be taken at bedtime with GPS Reset. For the average, healthy person, we do not recommend more than two servings a day. For an athlete who heavily trains, three times a day would be fine as well. Higher amounts of L-arginine and L-citrulline might cause osmotic diarrhea. Taken at separate times throughout the day would negate this effect. GPS Circulate contains vitamins and amino acids. L-arginine is an amino acid used to improve athletic capacity, muscle growth, sexual performance and cardiovascular function. It also stimulates the immune system.*

Q: Can I take products by PURE together or must I use them individually? Which products are compatible, and which are not?
A: Many of products by PURE can be taken together. We do not suggest taking products containing caffeine together, or before bed time.  You can find recommended use on each label and online to identify which products are recommended at what time throughout the day and with/without food.

Q: What is the  difference between Organic Sulfur and the sulfur that causes some people an allergic reaction?
A: Sulfur is one of the most abundant elements in the human body and is essential to life. Sulfur is found in many foods that we eat, including fish, poultry, eggs, milk, onions, garlic and cabbage. When people say they are allergic to sulfur, they mean that they’re either sensitive to sulfites, which are preservatives found in red wines and some foods, or that they are allergic to sulfonamides, found in sulfa antibiotic drugs. Sulfites and sulfonamides, even though they sound like sulfur, are very different and have unrelated mechanisms of action. It is safe to use MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), the only ingredient in Organic Sulfur. This chemical is in animals, humans and many plants. When a person says they have a sulfa allergy or sulfite sensitivity.

Q: We noticed a change in taste to the Liquid Cleanse. Was there a formula change?
A: The herbs used in Cleanse are from naturally growing plants. The herbs may be harvested during different seasons and may come from different areas. These can cause a variation in taste. The formula has not changed.

Q: Can products by PURE cause a false positive on a 10-panel drug test?
A: Absolutely not. Our weight loss products do not contain ingredients that would cause false positive results on drug tests. Our GPS line of products (GPS Hydrate, GPS Energize, GPS Circulate, GPS Rebuild and GPS Reset) have been tested and are Informed-Sport Certified.

Target your ability to focus

Your coworker is asking you a question, your kids want your attention, you’re late for an appointment, the 6:00 news is on, a text message just came through, what next?

Bothered by distractions? The world is full of them which makes it easy to lose your focus. I know I’m guilty of trying to do multiple things at once, even though I know how unproductive it is. Julie Morgenstern, author of Time Management from the Inside Out, says, “It has been scientifically demonstrated that the brain cannot effectively or efficiently switch between tasks, so you lose time. It takes four times longer to recognize new things so you’re not saving time; multitasking costs time. You also lose time because you often make mistakes.”1

Do you have a hard time remembering what was discussed at yesterday’s meeting? Are you repeatedly late for appointments? How can we fine-tune our focus, sharpen our concentration and improve our memory?

Fine-tune your focus

  • Do one thing. Staying focused can only happen when we say ‘yes’ to one thing and ‘no’ to everything else. Eliminating things or tasks can help improve your focus. Remember, you can always do the ‘other things’ later.
  • Commit yourself. Another way to stay focused is to stay committed. It’s not what you’re doing, or the result, that matters; rather, being committed to the process is what matters.2 If there’s no commitment, you’ll never see those results.
  • Leverage your energy. A third way to increase focus is to work when your energy is greatest. Is there a time of day when you’re more alert? For instance, I like to write in the morning hours because that’s when my mind is the freshest and I know I’ll be more productive. Don’t waste your mental energy.

Sharpen your concentration

  • Involve all your senses. Read aloud while you are reading something. Write down notes while you are listening to someone talk.
  • Pay attention. Simple as that. But you need to get enough sleep and eat right so you can pay attention.
  • Don’t just listen, understand. If learning something complex, make sure you really understand it first and did not just memorize it. Summarize the information in your own words and try to explain it to someone else.

Improve your memory

  • Other than focusing, how are you with remembering things? There’s nothing better for a sharp memory than a well-balanced diet and exercise. Certain activities can help sharpen your memory, too. Things like Soduko and word games, recalling lists, taking a class, and learning a language or a new sport. Anything that challenges your mind can boost your memory.

Supplement with products by PURE

  • Clear the morning fog, energize your daily workout, or avoid the mid-afternoon slump with ENERGY. This energy drink is packed with antioxidants, botanicals and natural sources of caffeine, and is the perfect alternative to sugar-laden, artificially sweetened energy drinks on the market.
  • GPS Energize provides antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, delivering nutritive support to your workouts and activities.
  • For sustained energy, elevated mood and enhanced mental focus, try Matcha Vegan Shake plant-based protein shake. It combines premium, ceremonial matcha with sacha inchi and chlorella for a nourishing drink that also helps support weight management.*
  • If you enjoy coffee, PURE Café and PURE Perk both increase energy, support mental clarity and suppress appetite.* PURE Cafe has a delicious, mocha flavor whereas PURE Perk is a dark roast coffee that may promote the release of dopamine, a brain neurotransmitter. It also contains PEA (phenylethylamine HCl) that supports the production of feel-good neurotransmitters and acts as a stimulant.*

Take these ideas and incorporate them into your day-to-day routines. You can reclaim your focus and memory.

Target brain health – keep it top of mind

When you’re enjoying a meal, are you mindful of the food you’re eating for a healthy brain? Maybe you’re thinking about nourishing your muscles if you’re an athlete, or consuming vitamin C if it’s flu season. But the brain? I think we tend to forget (no pun intended) about the brain when it comes to nutrition.

The brain is a multitasking machine that requires a ton of energy and quality nutrition. It relies on glucose for fuel. In fact, glucose from carbohydrates is the primary source of energy for every cell in the body. When the brain doesn’t have enough glucose, the nerve cells struggle with communicating which can lead to forgetfulness and poor concentration.

Your brain is constantly working, creating every memory, enabling every move and every step you take. Remember the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, “If I only had a brain”? We all want to stay sharp later in life and that requires nourishment, exercise, sleep and less stress. Imagine how much better your brain could function if you were to make these adjustments to your daily routine? I believe that what we feed our brain today will have a big impact on how it functions as we get older.

Brain candy:1

  • About 75 percent of the brain is water, so dehydration can have a negative effect.
  • Your brain uses 20% of the body’s oxygen and energy requirements.2
  • The fastest speed for information to pass between neurons is about 250 mph.
  • The human brain weighs about three pounds.

Your brain on products by PURE

Besides glucose, there are other nutrients the brain needs. Antioxidants protect the brain against free radical damage. Things like beta-carotene (from carrots),1 lutein (from fruits and vegetables)3 and selenium (from Brazil nuts) may help to decrease oxidative damage and thus prevent cognitive decline.4 CalciuMK+ is a good source of selenium. Daily Build, a CORE4 product, is a rich in antioxidants. Its 23 essential vitamins and minerals, vegetable extracts, antioxidants, phytonutrients, amino acids and trace minerals help support brain and nervous system function.*

Vitamins A, C and E also help protect the brain against oxidative stress.5 Mangosteen is known for its antioxidant content and its ability to neutralize free radicals in the body. Think B vitamins for brain health. When our diets lack B vitamins, the cells in our brain do not communicate as efficiently. You may lack concentration or feel fatigued. B12 (from animal protein), B6 (from pork, chicken, eggs) and folate (from eggs, leafy greens) can help with memory and cognition.6 ENERGY and Daily Build are excellent sources of B vitamins.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in normal growth and development and brain function.* Deficiencies in omega-3 can cause fatigue and problems with memory.6  Mila contains 3 grams of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) omega-3 fatty acid. The whole family can enjoy Mila as an easy addition to meals.

Studies show that curcumin, the substance that gives curry its yellow color, may improve memory and mood in people with mild memory loss.7 Daily Build has a Bio-Protection Blend that contains turmeric extract, from curcumin. Read: Spice up your cleansing regimen.

Daily Detox helps cleanse the body of toxins. The absence of toxins in the body naturally helps clear our thinking and improves our mood.*

If you’re looking for mental focus, PURE Perk is your go-to drink. This stimulating coffee provides mental focus in just minutes and boosts energy up to five hours! Methylliberine is a chemical that may promote the release of dopamine, a brain neurotransmitter that influences mood, memory and pleasurable reward.*

Next time you sit down for a meal, remember to feed your brain. Prepare for the future by keeping good nutrition top of mind.

Target fat – can’t live with it, can’t live without it

Let’s face it, fat cells get a bad rap. If you’re trying to maintain your weight, they are the enemy. If you’re trying to put on the pounds, well, that’s a different story. Either way, we suggest you get to know more about them, so you can better understand how they work in your body.

Fat cells, also called adipose tissue, may make you cringe, but the body needs them. They store energy for when you need it later, they regulate body temperature and they release hormones that control metabolism. The important thing is to keep them in balance. You don’t want too many of them, because once you have them, they never go away!

Did you know?

  • Fat cells can grow up to 1000 times their original size.1
  • Fat cells are permanent. You can’t get rid of it; they can only decrease in size.2
  • Once a fat cell reaches its maximum capacity, the number stays consistent. New fat cells are made as old fat cells die off.2
  • During adulthood, about 8% of fat cells die every year only to be replaced by new ones.3
  • As newborns grow, their fat cells increase naturally just like other cells.3
  • Muscle is more dense than fat; fat is larger in volume.
  • 75 percent of persons who are obese in adolescence will likely be obese in adulthood, while only 10 percent of healthy weight children will become obese later in life.4
  • There are three kinds of fat cells: brown, white and subcutaneous. Brown fat helps with warmth and burns more fat; white fat stores energy and produces hormones; subcutaneous fat lives right under the skin.5

PURE has a variety of products to help you target your weight goals. 360 Complete Shake ican help you gain or lose weight. Add it to your daily food intake to increase calories. The protein, when combined with resistance exercise, can help increase muscle mass. Instead of adding calories from unhealthy sources high in sugar and void of nutritional content, 360 Complete Shake is an excellent source of high-quality protein packed with nutrients.

Other products by PURE that can help with weight management include Daily Detox, Green Coffee Bean, HealthTrim Cleanse, Matcha Vegan Shake, Metabolic ONE, Mila, PURE Café, PURE Perk and SleepTrim.

One more thing to note is that essential fatty acids, things your body can’t make and are available only through the foods you eat or supplements you take, are used for many functions in the body. The brain is 60% fat6 and thus needs essential fatty acids to do its job. Mila is an excellent source of fatty acids, or omega-3s.

Was that a yawn? Did you get enough sleep last night? If you didn’t, do yourself a favor and read this post. It’s World Sleep Day® and a great opportunity to celebrate sleep because sleep is, well … dreamy!

You may already know how important sleep is for your body. Do you sleep 7 to 8 hours every night? I usually have no trouble getting to sleep and I rarely wake up in the middle of the night, though I do have some bad habits like playing games on my phone right before turning off the light. Now, getting out of bed in the morning is a totally different story. I’m not a morning person.

Whatever your sleep habits, getting quality sleep and an adequate amount are vital to health, and we’re going to discuss the benefits in this post. Lack of sleep can certainly make one cranky, but it can change more than just your mood.

Lose sleep and more

You charge your phone at night, right? Well, your body, and brain, need to recharge, too. Lose sleep and you’ll lose the ability to recall details or to focus. Your brain needs sleep to catch up. Lack of sleep may cause you to experience more negative emotional reactions and fewer positive ones.2

  • Lose sleep and your blood pressure doesn’t have time to rest, which can lead to illness.
  • Lose sleep and your muscles can’t repair themselves from the day’s activities.
  • Lose sleep and you’ll disrupt the hormones that control appetite. When these get out of balance, so does the temptation to eat unhealthily. You’ll also be more tired and less likely to exercise. Not a good combination.

Can you get too much sleep?

Yes, but we don’t want you to lose sleep over it. Sleeping too much may have the same effects as not sleeping enough. According to a study in the journal Sleep, researchers defined short sleep as six hours or less, adequate sleep as seven to eight hours and long sleep as nine or more hours.1

A study from the American Heart Association showed that people who slept for ten hours in a 24-hour period were 30% more likely to die prematurely, compared to those who slept for eight hours. Longer sleepers were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.2

If you’re not getting adequate sleep, or if you’re getting too much, we can help.

Fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up refreshed with SleepTrim, and help the body burn calories while you sleep.* Melatonin is released in two stages throughout the night, ensuring continued absorption. A Relaxation Blend of botanicals, including magnesium, L-theanine, passion flower and chamomile, helps the body relax mentally and physically.* Melatonin decreases as we age, making its consumption even more important.

Relaxed muscles are necessary for adequate sleep. CalciuMK+ can help by supplying magnesium, a mineral that relaxes muscles but also regulates blood pressure already in normal range.* CalciuMK+ is an excellent source of magnesium, providing 50% of your daily value.

GPS Reset, a product in our performance line, encourages restful sleep while enhancing muscle physiology and calorie burning. It supports the release of growth hormone (HGH) which encourages adequate sleep. Think of HGH as your body’s master hormone. It helps to maintain your health as an adult by controlling metabolism, immunity, brain functions, temperature regulation, heart health, organ and tissue growth and more. The older you get, the less your body produces it. Lose sleep and your body loses the ability to produce it as the only time the body releases HGH is when it sleeps.

GPS Reset not only helps you sleep but it helps boosts lean body mass and overnight recovery from physical activity from the day. *

Can’t stay awake? Caffeine and other botanicals might do the trick. Products like PURE Perk, PURE Café, ENERGY, GPS Energize, Matcha Vegan Shake and 360 Complete Shake work in different ways to boost your energy.* Be sure to monitor your caffeine consumption and limit it to no more than 400mg a day.

Well, I hope I didn’t put you to sleep. Then again, that might be a good thing!

World Sleep Day is an awareness activity of World Sleep Society, founded by World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) and World Sleep Federation (WSF).

There’s a nootropic for that

If you’re a student studying for an exam, a professional running a business or someone who has trouble remembering passwords (like me), you might be interested in nootropics — substances that are known to improve cognitive function.

Nootropics, also called “smart drugs”, are substances (drugs, supplements or functional foods) that “turn” your mind to boost your cognitive abilities. The word nootropics comes from the Greek word nous, meaning mind, and trepein meaning to turn. They are not vitamins or minerals; they can be plant derived or synthetically produced in a laboratory. 1

How do nootropics work?

The mechanism of action of each nootropic varies, but they can enhance learning and memory with very few side effects. There are a variety of them and they each work differently. Depending on what nootropic you consume, you could go from being able to give 100% when not taking them, to being able to give 105% or 110% when you are.1

Here we’ll focus on natural nootropics which include, but are not limited to, the following. These are naturally-occurring elements from plants that provide mild cognitive-enhancing effects.

  • GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid)
  • PEA (phenethylamine HCL)
  • L-theanine
  • Taurine
  • Caffeine
  • Geranium

Nootropic varieties

Nootropics are categorized into three groups: racetams, stimulants and nutraceuticals. Each group has a specific set of functions. 1

  1. Racetams – These affect memory, mood, mental agility and focus. Their benefits include increased memory capacity, enhanced mental clarity, greater concentration, increased calmness, better recall of ideas and quicker recognition of patterns. Racetams allow both analytical and creative work to be performed simultaneously.
  2. Stimulants – These increase attention and alertness which make concentration easier. Stimulants also make the brain adapt to stress by increasing energy levels, blood pressure, and heart and respiration rates.
  3. Nutraceuticals – These are food products that combine the effects of racetams and stimulants to a limited extent.

Products by PURE

There are many products by PURE that contain nootropics. PURE Perk contains a proprietary blend of nootropics designed to assist with mental clarity, memory and energy. The ingredients PEA, methylliberine, citrus aurantium extract, L-theanine, caffeine and phosphatidylcholine in PURE Perk are all nootropics.

ENERGY, GPS Hydrate and GPS Energize contain taurine, a nootropic. The following products contain caffeine, a nootropic. Be sure to monitor your caffeine consumption and limit it to no more than 400mg a day.

Nootropics are certainly worth the attention, and beneficial to our attention! However there’s no substitute for getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly, keeping mentally active, eating a balanced diet and avoiding alcohol to optimize brain health.

Educating customers about the products

If you are just starting out with your PURE business, you’re probably asking yourself, how am I going to learn everything I need to know about the products and opportunity so I can share them with customers? It may seem like a daunting task, but you don’t have to be an expert.

Conversely, if you’ve been with PURE, you know how important it is to be prepared to answer questions, and you know where to seek out answers you may not have.

Knowledge is power

It’s difficult to share products with a customer if you know nothing about them and if you don’t know how that product will address his or her specific needs. The key is knowing your customer’s needs and understanding how the product can benefit them. For example, a benefit of PURE Perk is that it provides mental focus within just minutes.* If you know someone at work who has trouble staying focused, they might benefit from this fantastic product.

Listen carefully to your customer and understand what they’re looking to gain from a product. You would not want to share Metabolic ONE with someone who has a goal of putting on additional weight. It wouldn’t make sense.

Here are some common scenarios. For each, we’ve listed the tools and/or resources that will help them find more information about PURE.

  • Your friend’s 8-year-old daughter hates eating vegetables. Show her the Product Overview Guide at livepure.com so she can become educated about our products, or you can send her directly to learn about Greens, a good source of antioxidant-rich fruits and greens. Here she will find the product description, recommended usage and ingredients. You can also show her where to find recipes using Greens.
  • Your sister was just laid off from her job. Introduce her to the PURE opportunity by sharing the PURE Prosperity Compensation Plan video. Send her to livepure.com so she can browse. Introduce her to PURE’s Facebook page to meet the community.
  • Your brother is competing in a half marathon and is looking for natural supplementation to decrease his time. Give him a GPS Playbook so he can learn all about the GPS performance line of products. Use the GPS sampling sleeves to introduce GPS Energize or GPS Hydrate.
  • You have a new IBO on your team who has nutrition questions you can’t answer. Show them the Ask the Expert forum where they can submit their questions and receive answers within 24 hours. Make sure they know how to use their Back Office to find product education. They can also find articles about nutrition on PURE’s corporate blog.

Be a product of the product

Education is important, but what about the delivery of your message? It’s imperative that you are a product of the product. That means that you regularly use the product so you can speak to its benefits, usage, and any other relevant topics a customer may want to know.

If you personally use the products, your confidence will show, and you will be enthusiastic to share them with others. Enthusiasm will come naturally when you love the products. When you’re enthusiastic, you’ll remove any uncertainty your prospects may have. If they believe in you, they will believe in the product.

It’s essential to be brief, too. Keep your benefit list short and choose the most impactful ones to share. Too much information at once can be initially overwhelming.

Any objections?

If a customer has an objection to a product, it’s probably because you may have recommended the wrong product for their specific need or they want to learn more about why that product is the best solution for them. Share with them the product’s value, how it should and can be used, and other products by PURE that it can be taken with.

Keep in mind you don’t have to have all those details memorized, but become familiar with the available tools, above, so you know how to quickly seek out answers to best support your customers questions.

Other ways to become educated are to regularly engage with your upline, which is the person who sponsored you. Keep a list handy of testimonials about a product to share. Your own personal use of the product is super powerful.

Remember that your customers crave product knowledge. It’s how they make their decisions, and it’s how they know they can trust you. So, they need to feel that you have their best interests at heart.
